How to Study for the TEAS Exam: A Step-by-Step Guide to Success
If you’re struggling to study for an entrance exam like the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills)—a critical step toward getting into many nursing programs—just know you’re not alone. I’ve been there too. On my first attempt, I didn’t do as well as I hoped. But on my second try, I scored 95%, and now I want to share the tips that helped me drastically improve my score.
The TEAS might feel intimidating, but with the right mindset, a solid plan, and strategic study habits, you can walk into test day feeling confident and prepared.
Here’s my step-by-step guide to help you study effectively for the TEAS exam and give yourself the best shot at success.
📚 1. Understand the Exam Format
Understanding what’s covered in each section is so important because it helps you manage your time and energy more effectively. I’ll be honest—on my first attempt, I didn’t really pay much attention to the exam format or timing. I just studied like I normally do without any planning or strategy but I quickly realized how much strategy and familiarity with the exam format matter when it comes to test taking.
The TEAS is a multiple-choice exam, and is divided into four main sections:
Reading (45 questions – 55 minutes)
Math (38 questions – 57 minutes)
Science (50 questions – 60 minutes)
English & Language Usage (37 questions – 37 minutes)

📝 2. Take a Diagnostic Test- Most Important Step.
I truly believe this is the most important step when studying for the TEAS exam: take a diagnostic practice test before diving into your books. It helps you identify your strengths and weaknesses right from the start. That way, you can focus your study time where it’s needed most and track your progress as you go.
I deeply regret skipping this step the first time I studied for the TEAS. I thought I could just review everything and be fine—but I ended up wasting a lot of time. Now, I use this method for every exam I take, and without a doubt, it’s helped me consistently score A’s. Please don’t skip this step! It truly makes all the difference.
📅 3. Create a Study Schedule
Set a realistic study plan based on your test date. Ideally, give yourself at least 6–8 weeks to prepare. Schedule specific days and times to study, and break your sessions into focused blocks (e.g., 1–2 hours a day, 5 days a week).
➡️ Tip: Study one subject per day instead of jumping between topics to keep things organized and efficient. I have attached a study template that I used.
🔍 4. Use the Right Study Materials
Invest in reliable study resources such as:
ATI TEAS Study Manual (official guide)
TEAS prep books from Kaplan
My favorite and my top recommendation is ATI TEAS secret study guide. This is actually the only study guide or material I used.
You can also check out some of the youtube channels such as @nursesarah or @nursecheung, who I think has some of the best content regarding anything nursing.
5. Practice Time Management
- The TEAS is timed, so it’s important to practice under timed conditions. As you take practice tests, challenge yourself to stay within the time limits to build stamina and speed.
- I think the best way to build this stamina is to Reassess, Review and Repeat.
- As you get closer to test day, revisit your weakest areas and take additional practice tests.
- PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!
